Julio Pascual is the Chief, Nephrology Department and Kidney Transplantation, Hospital del Mar, Barcelona, Spain, and Associate Professor, Universidad Autónoma, Barcelona. He is also the Chief of the Kidney Diseases Research Group at the Biomedical Research Park in Barcelona.

He undertook his residency at the Department of Nephrology, Ramón y Cajal Hospital, Madrid, Spain, before becoming a staff member in 1991. Since 1995, he managed the hospitalisation unit within the Kidney Transplantation Program at that Hospital, and has had a very active role in the development of new immunosuppressive strategies. Dr Pascual completed a fellowship in Research and Transplantation at the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 2006-2007.

Dr Pascual is author or co-author of more than 1000 congress communications and peer-reviewed journal articles, covering all areas of nephrology (impact factor >1000, h-factor 37), and has given up to 250 conferences and invited lectures worldwide. With is research group, he belongs to the Spanish Kidney Research Network (RedinRen), developing collaborative efforts in nephrology and kidney transplant research.

He has been a council-member of the Spanish Society of Nephrology (2008-2014), and the Spanish Society of Transplantation (2011-2014). He has been a Board member of the Descartes Group (Developing Education Science and Care for Renal Transplantation in European States), the transplantation group within the ERA-EDTA (2012-2017). Dr Pascual is also member of the European Best Renal Practices Group developing guidelines for kidney transplantation, serving as coordinator for the recipient evaluation group. He is a member of the major nephrology and transplantation societies and is on the editorial boards of several relevant scientific journals. Dr Pascual is currently Editor-in-Chief of the journal Transplantation Reviews.
